What exactly is it and how do I build one? I've seen references to it a lot here but don't have a clear picture of what it is and mainly, how to set one up. Help!

hi
I use 45 gal plastic drums. I just layer fruit and veg waste. Within 10 days a full barrel has heated and shrunk to less then half the barrel.
A couple of good things. One you have by passed the heat of the organic waste. two it has the bactera the worms like so they eat it faster. three you can process more food waste.

ok so I have an old cooler I can use for this. All I need to do is throw a bunch of waste in, let it sit in the garage for a week & half, and then feed that to the worms?

yes make sure it is sealed and it is not freezing . Mind you mine digests even when everything else is freezing as long as i keep putting fresh waste in.
Also make sure you drain the fluid off before feeding
