www.standinghorse.com/wriggler/egg.htmlThese are pictures i took from one of the student groups i had in the abc science fair last year. We did hatching rates of reds and euros will have the writeup at the end of the week. Just got ahold of the teacher and she has the paperwork from the groups. I had four groups at her school plus one more group from a different school. It really was a lot of fun . Will be doing again this year so three years now.

Speaking of coccoons ... I was prepping some worms for a 2L bottle bin that I'm giving to a fellow biology teacher who is going to use it to complete her carbon cycle experiment. In the process of pulling some worms from my bin, I also snagged three coccoons.
Two I tossed in the bin but the third somehow never made it. I found it on the outside of the bottle and it had shriveled and changed color (darker). While I don't expect it to be a viable coccoon anymore, I was just wondering if this is normal for a coccoon left out to dry. Also, if coccoons can survive droughts, is there the teensiest chance that it might be viable if tossed in the bin?

When cocoons are getting closer to hatching they do change color (a darker burgandy). That cocoon, being shriveled, might have already hatched. If you can get a magnifying lens, you will have a lot of fun. I have watched many hatch with my kids.

Well, the fact of the matter is that the coccoon was a light, light yellow and turned to deep burgundy within a matter of hours. Can this happen? Oh, I do hope the newly hatched worms that were born to the outside of the bottle can survive.
