Judy posted about how she needed to prep castings for retail packaging on another thread. While I shared some variations of the sift method, she got me to thinking of alternative prep methods and this is one I thought of and will try after 8 in the morning. I use a final bedding of leaf mold after the worm herd has consumed the newspaper in the bedding mix while separating the worms to new bins. I do this to keep the worms feeding without reconsuming the castings after the paper shred indicators are consumed and the leaves break down nicely when I use the compost in the garden or for potting mix. Tonite I dug a prep pit outside the back door just large enough to set my push lawnmower in. I also installed the mulching shield on the grass chute. Tomorrow I am going to pour the vermicompost into the pit and mulch it. This should break down the finished bin leaf feed and remnant paper shred and produce a consistant texture of the vermicompost without the need of sifting. Use of the pit will minimize casting loss and eradicate any stray worms. Let y'all know how it works out as soon as I can fire up the mower without waking my neighbors.

Well the mix isn't as fine as sifted castings of course, but the twigs and leaves all mulched nicely and the castings colored the remnant paper so it looks like just more leaf mulch in the mix. Not perfect but suitable and a lot easier and more labor time effective.
Of course the lowered labor factor can be figured into lower pricing for those planning on competatively marketing castings on a small retail scale.
