It is my understanding that all earthworms secrete this fluid as a defense mechanism. . I have also been told that it is more pronounced in the Eisenia species and very noticabe in the E. fetida manure worms. Secretion of colemic fluid is supposed to be a contributing factor to the pungent odor associated with E.f . worms.

also it is ussally yellow the worms secrete it to scare you off in the case of manure worms the smell is supposed to do. I find my reds will secrete it quite a lot where my nite crawler are more prone to jumping around rather then producing the fluid. Plus totally different smells.

The reason for the post was I hadn't notice the smell form my encs or efs just the manure worms which is there right away when disturbed it took quit some poking to get the other ones to emit it mostly the efs when they begin to get try. Guess I should have investigated before posting.
