Are tea bag staples harmful to compost worms? How about things like salsa and other very spicy foods? Thanks for any insights.

Staples, while not neccesarily being detrimental to the worms as they will avoid non organic items, could possibly cause contact injury. Also if you are one to handle compost bare handed, the staples could pose a puncture hazard to you.
Salsa and high acidic wastes such as onions and tomatoes are avoided by the Eisenia fetida and other composting worms as a foodstuff, however small concentrations will make the bedding slightly acidic increasing the arobic activity of the worms.
High acid content of precompoting foodstuffs can support potworms .
High acid content wastes can sometimes be made less acidic by mixing in eggshell, bone meal or powdered milk to add calcium.
I generally add the hig acidic wastes to my anerobic decomp piles and let microganisms do the breakdown.
